Adaptive Interaction with Web Sites: an Overview of Methods and Techniques

The World Wide Web (WWW) tends to become the main medium supporting access to information and services to an expanding group of users. The increasing complexity of existing web applications and the volume of data offered often result in user disorientation. Adaptive interaction is proposed by many researchers as an effective means for tackling this problem. In this paper, we present and review existing approaches for developing adaptive web systems. Throughout the review, special emphasis is provided on techniques exploiting web usage data. The survey of methodologies is based on a twodimensional approach proposed here and used to distinguish different adaptive web systems.
